Metals and Nonmetals

What Are the Differences between Metals and Nonmetals?

On the periodic table of elements there are many types of elements but they are divided into two groups. Metals and None-metals. You can tell them apart by the zig zag line or “the golden staircase” on the periodic table. The non metals are on the right part of the golden staircase and are often called “metalloids or semi metals.” We use physical and chemical properties to tell apart the metals and non metals. The physical properties of metals are; shininess, good conduction of heat and electricity, high melting point and density, can change shapes or can be hammered, you cannot see through them, and metals make bell like sounds. Know the chemical properties of metals are; have 1-3 electrons, loose electrons easily. They also redact easily. Know the nonmetals are different. Their physical properties are; poor at conducting energy and heat, can be any state which all depends on the room temperature. Nonmetals are transparent and have a “dull appearance”. The chemical properties of nonmetals are the following; that they have 4-8 electrons, but everything else is basically the same as the metal chemical properties. Know we see that nonmetals and metals are very different but do own some similar chemical properties.

  1. Good review of the properties of metals and non-metals. Hope it helps.
